Since our 1957 graduation, I completed 30 years of civil service for the Federal government and I was able to get an early out (commuted sentence) in 1993. (As I recall, I took the civil service exam to get a day off from school in my senior year.) During the 30 year interval I lived in Lake Stevens, WA; Portland, OR; Walla Walla, WA; Albuquerque, NM; Kansas City, MO and currently Henderson, NV (suburb of Las Vegas). Most of my Federal service was in the contracting field and with the Corps of Engineers.
I was married for a 10 year period and lived on Portland, OR during that time. I completed college while living in Portland. We had no children. (Now that women in their 60's are having children and due to the advent of sperm banks, I'm thinking of starting my family very soon).
Gratefully, I have been blessed with good health for most of the 40+ year period. Of course, you need to be strong to pack and unpack as often as I have. Actually, the moving and traveling have been fun but difficult too. The best part of moving has been meeting a lot of wonderful people.
During the past seven years I have worked for the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) as a contract administrator. SNWA is building a $2 billion+ water conveyance system with appurtenances to support the greater Las Vegas area. The work is interesting and challenging and barring the unforseen I will probably be working a few more years. I did purchase a home on Black Mountain last July and I have been busy trying to get settled in the house. I love the view but frankly, I could do without the yard work and the other maintenance associated with a single family dwelling. (Yeah, I know, everyone else has done this for years.)
Other than working, I enjoy seeing shows in Las Vegas, shopping (of course) and going out to dinner (as often as possible).
As I recall, the yearbook showed that I wanted to be the owner of a business. Mr. Tewkesbury suggested that my desire should be to "Own my own legitimate business", but Joan revised it for me. Since I am not required to own a legitimate business in order to achieve my goal, there are plenty of opportunities in Las Vegas! Who knows, I may achieve my goal yet!
2007 Update:
Retired from the Federal Government in 1992. Began working for the Southern Nevada Water Authority in 1993 and retired in May of 2007. I’m not sure if I’m retired or unemployed. I’m still unaccustomed to being at home.
I’ve lived in the greater Las Vegas area since 1987 and bought a home six years ago. Since it’s a buyer’s market in this area, I play to stay here for awhile. Then, who knows?
I’m divorced (once) and don’t have any children. (In Las Vegas people who have been divorced once are rare.)
